This Korean counterpart of our native Jeffersonia starts its life in early spring when it produces numerous stalks of upfacing blue-lavender cupped flowers. Just as the flowering ceases, the foliage emerges from the tight clump, resembling a nicely lobed Sanguinaria canadensis (bloodroot). Jeffersonia dubia prefers well-drained, but slightly moist soils and a pH near neutral.

The Asian version of this Epimedium relative. The leaves are more lobed and not as prominently divided as in our native J. diphylla. The flowers are much more intensely colored, lavender to lavender-blue and cup-shaped. Overall a slower grower but easy in a well drained, moist soil. Will endure drier spells late summer. Very few.

This famous woodland rock garden plant from Korea has long been cultivated in Japan. The pretty up-facing light mauve flowers emerge in early spring and are followed by attractive two-lobed leaves. It is easy to grow in light to full shade in gritty, gravelly, humusy or leafy (i.e. light and well drained) soil where it will form large clumps.
