After 15 years of fruitless searching, the late JC Raulston managed to locate Fatsia japonica 'Variegata' on a trip to the UK. After JC shared a rooted cutting with us, I dared to plant my new-found treasure outdoors for hardiness testing. Surprisingly, it proved to be much more hardy than the common green form. The 7' tall x 7' wide (at 10 years) clump is composed of upright woody stems topped with large, tropical-looking, evergreen leaves edged with an uneven white border. In the garden, Fatsia japonica 'Variegata' makes a stunning, bold textural centerpiece for year-round interest. In late October/early November, the clumps are topped by fascinating floral sprays of white flowers. From Zone 7a and north...what a nice houseplant!

This form has large tropical foliage with irregularly variegated white margins. Every leaf is different. Plant Delights Nursery has found 'Variegata' to be surprisingly more hardy than the normal green form. Fatsia is a dramatic foliage plant for shade. The variegation on this form makes it particularly useful for lighting up those darker corners.

Fatsia japonica variegata is a large shrub to small tree in the Aralia family. It will produce large thick rubbery leaves that can be over 1 foot wide. It will stay ever green in mild climates zone 8 and up but has survived in zone 6 with some winter protection such as leaves or up against a south facing wall. Plants can grow over 10 feet once mature but in cooler climates can be killed back some each year.

For winter, or for anywhere in the shade there is perhaps no more handsome evergreen shrub. Large evergreen leaves are marked with cream near the edges. To 8' tall and as wide in part shade or shade. Very handsome among Rhododendrons or with Bamboo. Occasional summer water. Lovely for entry ways. One of our favorite shrubs. White flowers appear in large clusters in fall against ivory white stems. Variegation increases with age. Click for a larger photo.
