Fargesia rufa is a recently-introduced species from the mountains of Western Sichuan, China. Fargesia rufa is a pachymorph, which means it couldn't run even if it was being chased down the mountain by a pack of starving pandas. This short, deer-resistant clumper makes an elegant, 6' tall upright fountain, although our 4-year-old clump is only 3.5' tall x 2' wide, with stems arching outwards to 8'. In addition to the wonderful form, the culm sheaths are reddish-brown. In initial tests, Fargesia rufa looks to be quite tolerant to both heat and cold.

One of the hardiest and most vigorous clumping bamboos, Fargesia 'Sunset Glow' has beautiful orange-red cane sheaths with the traditional narrow bamboo leaves. The growth habit is slightly weeping and very dense. 'Sunset Glow' is a non-invasive, high mountain, clumping bamboo that originated in China at elevations of 1000-3500', which is why it is hardy to zone 5 in the garden. It also makes an ideal container plant. Fargesia 'Sunset Glow' is sun and wind tolerant and makes a wonderful hedge or garden screen.

This lovely textured clumping variety is one of the very best in cold regions. Moderate growing it prefers light shade or protection from hot afternoon sun. To 12' tall and forming a slowly spreading clump. Canes rarely reach more than 1/2" in diameter. A great container subject as it will take tempertures colder than most clumpers and does not require the protection others require in containers. Rich soil with regular summer irrigation is best. An ideal bamboo for a screen or specimen.
