Thanks to our friends at Yucca Do, who suggested we try Dyckia choristaminea for winter hardiness. We were thrilled to find that it survived 8 degrees F with virtually no damage. This fascinating mini-bromeliad from the mountainous state of Rio Grande Do Sul in southern Brazil makes a small 6" tall x 15" wide clump of small rosettes, composed of narrow purple-tinted leaves, each lined with small non-aggressive baby spines. When the clumps mature, they are topped with 15" tall spikes of small, bright yellow flowers. Good drainage in the winter is very important.

Picture a silver Mondo Grass with lots of mousse on a bad hair day…what this plant lacks in warm & fuzzy, it makes up for in its intricate form. Stiff, arching thin ribbons of silver leaves lay this way and that in 4” tall clumps slowly stretching to 10” wide. Well drained soils, sun to lightest shade; happy in pots, where it can be elevated to ‘close up’ status. April-May yellow fragrant blooms on 8” stems! Will survive some drought but appreciates regular summer water.
