The cultivar name (NOT translated as "Honey, I shrunk the kids") refers to the silky threads or filifers that decorate these rosette-forming agaves. They are solitary plants, to 18" tall and wide, with the dark green leaves, strikingly variegated with creamy margins, the quite symmetric filifers adding to the show. The species, from the high country of Mexico's Durango State, shows a decent tolerance for moisture and frost in USDA zone 8. But temperatures below 20 °F, bottom of USDA zone 9, can mark the beautiful variegations so we recommend a moveable container.

A striking variegated Agave that forms a single rosette more than a foot across with leaf edges lined in cream and a center of green. Each leaf margin is edged slightly in brown fur and has filaments that curl off of the edge in fine threads. Full sun to light shade in very well drained soil with occasional water in the warm summer months to speed growth. Excellent in a container that is protected from winter wet or moved indoors.

Translation: "Queen of the White Thread". Tender plant for our area unless you have one of those mild gardens with warm microclimates that always makes us green with envy. This Agave will be an object of envy as well making a 12" clump with rich patterned leaves with white curls.

(aka: Agave filifera 'Compacta Marginata') This amazingly slow-growing century plant has been circulated in the collectors' market for several years, but we are finally able to offer it in our catalog. The 1' tall x 18" wide rosette is composed of dark green leaves, each highlighted by a dramatic creamy-white border and curly white hairs. This solitary (non-offsetting) plant makes a lovely specimen for Zone 8 and south, and a dramatic container specimen in parts north. If anyone knows where this clone originated (probably Japan), we'd love to know. Agave flowers attract hummingbirds.
