The rich burgundy foliage of this hybrid native perennial make it a standout even when it's not in flower! In summer the dark rosette of foliage is topped by glowing scarlet spikes of flaring tubular blooms. Grow this moisture loving plant in a bog garden or in average to wet garden soils. Attracts Hummingbirds. Does best with a consistently moist to wet soil. The true origin of this plant seems to have been confused as it is often listed as a cultivar of the native Cardinal Flower, Lobelia cardinalis and as a hybrid.

Bolt upright stems cloaked in royal burgundy leaves are 2-3' tall and topped August > October with bright, scarlet red flowers! Ready for a hummingbird convention? This perennial needs constantly moist soil and is quite happy in a bog or even submerged just below the surface of a pond. It's a clumper and only about 15-18" wide. Often referred to as 'short lived', we've had ours for 10+ years and dividing it once in awhile seems to give it a new life…it's easy enough! Full sun for strong stems (no staking!).

If you have the spot for this plant then there is no reason to not to grow this unless you simply don't do red because this is a smoldering fountain of saturated pigmentation celebrating the red spectrum. Red foliage and bright red flowers on 3'-4' stems in late summer. Moist and rich.
